Abstract
This paper reports reports on the spin-orbit exciton and its crystal-field splitting in $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-RuCl${}_{3}$, as observed in Raman and infrared spectroscopy and show the onset of a j=1/2 scenario and signatures of dominant Kitaev exchange.
