Abstract

This paper demonstrates the application of Harris hawks optimization (HHO) algorithm to tune a PID controller for speed regulation of a DC motor. The proposed technique was used to obtain optimal parameters of PID controller by minimizing the integral of time multiplied absolute error (ITAE) as the objective function. The speed step response characteristics of the proposed HHO/PID and other state-of-the-art controllers tuned by atom search optimization (ASO), grey wolf optimization (GWO) and sine-cosine algorithm (SCA) were compared using transient response and robustness analyses. The simulation results have shown that the proposed HHO/PID controller is more effective and robust than ASO/PID, GWO/PID and SCA/PID controllers for the speed control of a DC motor even under uncertainties.
