Abstract

Abstract Rechargeable aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) are recognized as one of the most competitive next generation energy storage systems due to the high theoretical capacity (820 mAh g −1 ), abundant reserves, low expense, and environmental friendliness. However, in comparison to that monovalent ion secondary battery, the multivalent ion rechargeable battery faces larger metal ion sizes and higher charge/discharge number in the electrochemical reaction process, thereby suffering from larger steric resistance and the electrostatic repulsion in the intercalation–deintercalation process. At present, a great deal of research has shown that the guest ion pre‐embedded host structured cathodes can effectively alleviate the above problems and improve the comprehensive performance of aqueous zinc ion battery. In this review, the development of vanadium oxide ion‐intercalated cathode materials in AZIBs is reviewed, mainly including M X V 2 O 5 ∙nH 2 O, M X V 3 O 8 ∙nH 2 O, M X V 6 O 13 ∙nH 2 O, M X V 6 O 16 ∙nH 2 O, and M X V 10 O 25 ∙nH 2 O type materials. The reaction mechanisms and electrochemical performance of these materials are described, and the future research directions are prospected. It is expected to provide fundamental and engineering guidance for the development of high performance AZIBs cathode materials.
