H, T, and Masseter Reflexes and Silent Period

Abstract
Abstract This chapter looks into H, T, masseter reflexes, and silent periods. It starts with how conventional nerve conduction studies (NCS) primarily assess the distal segments of the peripheral nerves. The reflex studies reveal conduction characteristics along the entire course of the sensory and motor axons as well as the excitability of the neuronal pool. The chapter explains that the techniques to test the more proximal segments and the spinal cord include the Hoffman reflex (H reflex), tendon reflex (T reflex), tonic vibration reflex, and silent period (SP). It elaborates on the techniques’ basic mechanisms and possible diagnostic applications in evaluating the regions of the nervous system not accessible by conventional methods.
