Abstract

Hydrogen fuel has the potential to become a significant contributor to the world’s energy mix in the coming years. Hydrogen is a clean and renewable energy carrier that can be used in a variety of applications, from transportation to power generation. Hydrogen fuel produces zero emissions when used as a fuel source, and the only byproduct of hydrogen fuel combustion is water vapor, making it a much cleaner alternative to fossil fuels that emit harmful greenhouse gases. Hydrogen also has the potential to improve energy security and promote economic growth. As a fuel source that can be produced domestically, it can help reduce countries’ reliance on foreign energy sources and create new jobs in the energy sector. This review paper highlights the current and expected demand for hydrogen in the transportation sector, the primary sources of hydrogen demand in road vehicles, and the increasing interest in hydrogen use in rail, aviation, and maritime transport. Moreover, global efforts and national strategies toward producing, trading, and utilizing hydrogen as an energy carrier will be discussed.
