Abstract

Positioning within cellular mobile networking systems has drawn more and more attention from academia and industry with the rapid development and wide deployment of the 5G mobile communication system. In this area, though the traditional positioning methods like GNSS or UWB are also well-known alternative ways for target positioning, they are limited either by indoor signal blocking or expensive costing. In this paper, we design an Enhanced Cell-ID (E-CID) positioning method with error reduction considered, and evaluate its performance under a real 5G New Radio (5G-NR) system based on OpenAirInterface (OAI) in practical scenes for the first time. The office and auditorium are considered as two different scenes with different multipath conditions for the evaluation. The results show that the median positioning errors are 0.9794 and 0.8925 meters in the two indoor scenes with 40MHz bandwidth and a 2x2 antenna array equipped, and over 95% errors meet the 3-meter requirements of indoor commercial use cases defined in 3GPP 38.855.
