A Highly Efficient Design of Broadband Rectifier With Harmonic Suppression Transferring for Energy Harvesting and Wireless Power Transfer

Abstract

In this letter, a broadband rectifier based on harmonic suppression (HS) and fundamental impedance variation reduction (FIVR) is proposed for energy harvesting (EH). In the proposed network, a dual-band band-stop structure is deployed to suppress the second harmonic of the center frequencies of two half bandwidths for broadband power recycling while its in-band behavior is utilized to reduce diode impedance variation for facilitating broadband fundamental matching. This network consists of only three transmission lines (TLINs) whose parameters are analyzed and derived by closed-form equations. For validation, a BAT15-03W Schottky diode-based broadband rectifier is fabricated and measured showing that the rectifier has a compact size of <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$22.5\times22.8$ </tex-math></inline-formula> mm and can operate with power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 70% in a bandwidth of 46.8% from 1.77 to 2.85 GHz at 11.5-dBm input power. Also, highest PCE is recorded at 82.3% at 2.1 GHz. In addition, the rectifier can also achieve a similar bandwidth with PCE over 60% at 5-dBm input power and with PCE over 50% at 0-dBm input power, indicating a wide dynamic range operation during the bandwidth.
