Seismic vulnerability and fragility assessment of masonry structures within the historic centre of Meta (Naples, Southern Italy)

Abstract

The study presents a comprehensive analysis of the structural typologies and seismic vulnerability of the built environment within the municipality of Meta (Naples, Campania region of Italy), focusing on masonry structures found in the historical centre. Due to the high percentage of ancient masonry buildings designed without seismic criteria, the study, adopting the CARTIS survey form-developed within the DPC–ReLUIS Italian research project- investigates the key structural features that can affect the buildings’ seismic response, such as construction material and typological configuration. The vulnerability assessment is then performed following a vulnerability index-based approach that uses a survey form conceived for aggregated buildings. Expected damage scenarios, useful for seismic risk analysis, are simulated by selecting six seismic events from the INGV’s (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology) seismic hazard map for Meta and using a seismic intensity prediction equation. Finally, fragility curves are derived with a macroseismic approach for three different identified CARTIS masonry typologies, named MUR1, MUR2, and MUR3, highlighting the different probabilities of exceeding the various damage states. • Seismic vulnerability assessment of historic masonry buildings in Meta (Naples), focusing on ancient structures with poor seismic resistance. • Vulnerability index approach to quantify seismic risks and fragility curves developed for three masonry typologies (MUR1, MUR2 and MUR3). • Damage scenarios simulated based on INGV seismic hazard data. • Seismic risk mapping for urban planning and mitigation. • Probabilistic methods for developing fragility curves.
