Illustrated Checklist of the Mammals of the World

Abstract
This is the first work intended to list and illustrate every living and recently extinct species of mammal on Earth. Previous attempts to produce such lists did not include illustrations (e.g., Wilson and Reeder 1993, 2005). The Illustrated Checklist of the Mammals of the World (hereafter the Checklist) is based on the nine volumes of the Handbook of the Mammals of the World (hereafter HMW), but it mostly stands as a distinct work. It consists of two large (24 × 31 cm), heavy (6.4 kg), and high-quality volumes that come in a box. Volume 1 (631 pages) includes an index covering both volumes at the subfamily level, the list of contributors of the HMW volumes, a Foreword by Razan Al Mubarak (Managing Director of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund), a general Introduction, and the accounts of the species of Prototheria, Metatheria, Atlantogenata, and Euarchontoglires.
