Abstract
A sacrificial Zn strategy is reported to anchor non-noble metal single atoms on 2D holey Mo<sub>2</sub>C nanosheets, enabling these individual metal atoms being coordinated with three adjacent Mo atoms on the surfaces for efficient water splitting.
