Abstract

The Pampas is considered one of the most suiTable areas of the world for grain crops production and one of the few with great capacity to contribute to future world food supply needs. Wheat is one of the four major grain crops currently produced, together with maize, soybean, and sunflower. Average actual wheat yields are well below estimated potential yields (2.4 and 8.0 t/ha— 1 respectively; Magrin and Rebella, 1991). This difference suggests that there are opportunities for transforming the present crop production systems into more productive alternatives.
