Abstract

The fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, which have unique advantages such as small size, biocompatibility, and high sensitivity, have received much attention in hand motion tracking applications. Despite the reported good performance and potential benefits of existing FBG sensing gloves, they still face challenges in terms of glove design, wearability, motion-sensing algorithms, and system accuracy and reliability. This article aims to provide a comprehensive survey of FBG sensing gloves, focusing on the topics of sensing characteristics, functionality, performance, system design, structure, and motion tracking algorithms. Through this survey, we have identified challenges and research gaps for FBG sensing gloves, including the need for innovation in system and structure design, the development of more advanced models that can better accommodate individual differences, and the improvement of multiplexing sensing capabilities. This survey can serve as a guide for future research in this exciting field.
