Natural compounds underpinning the genetic regulation of biofilm formation: An overview

Abstract

The crisis in worldwide health sectors due to rapidly growing enhancement in the antibiotic resistance of bacterial species has resulted in the search for alternate therapeutics. Since often such resistance is attributed to the biofilm matrix synthesized by bacterial cells, a search is being made to explore new compounds with easy permeability. The use of natural compounds isolated from higher plants, fungi and algae, due to their efficient capability of penetration within a living system are proved to be an efficient strategy for treating cells that are exhibiting such biofilm-associated resistant bacteria and hence can be used as efficient therapeutic agents. Upon entry, these natural compounds also can interact with the quorum sensing (QS) cascade leading to the destruction of the biofilm. The reduced production or loss of activities of the related genes and gene products are actually responsible for such biofilm irradiation activities. This review would focus on the efficacies of the natural compounds as alternate therapeutics for biofilm-associated antibiotic-resistant bacteria with special reference to their genetic contextual.
