Abstract
The Next Generation Science Standards is a more current example of widely adopted frameworks in the United States, though some states use other standards for science, such as Florida, which has the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for Science, and Texas, which has the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The poor performance of American students on science and the difficulties outlined earlier have led to the development of the Next Generation Science Standards, which are focused on developing students’ authentic science practices as well as disciplinary core ideas and cross-cutting concepts. The principle belief is that a focus on authentic inquiry will foster students’ competencies to apply and transfer their knowledge in flexible ways. Due to the poor performance by American students on science, in 2001 researchers and other stake-holders sought to improve the design of assessments in order to better inform instruction and, in turn, improve students’ science competencies.
