Abstract

In this paper, a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) coupled to a wind turbine exhibits the wind energy conversion system (WECS), links the utility grid through a 3- φ rectifier and a 3- φ voltage source inverter (VSI) to the point of common coupling (PCC). To control line current harmonics and to feed the electric power generated from wind energy into the electric grid, a feed forward neural network based Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used in direct power control (DPC). A comparison is made on the parameter, total harmonic distortion (THD) of source current from WECS without active shunt power filter (ASPF), ASPF with proportional-integral (PI) control and ASPF with ANN controller in DPC. The active power from WECS is injected into the grid by compensating the reactive power requirements of the system. The simulation results reveal the efficacy of WECS system with ANN controller in DPC with less THD.
