FIWARE: Standard-based Open Source Components for Cross-Domain IoT Platforms
Martin Bauer
Abstract
Success stories regarding the Internet of Things often pertain to individual domains or even small silos. The reason is that the technology landscape is highly heterogeneous, often involving proprietary technologies. To become successful in broader domains like smart cities, a common basis for achieving interoperability is required. FIWARE is an open-source ecosystem that provides components, called generic enablers, for building IoT platforms. FIWARE is built on formal and de-facto standards. In particular, the NGSI-LD information model and API forms the basis of interoperability between core FIWARE components. NGSI-LD is standardized by the ETSI Industry Specification Group on Context Information Management. The Smart Data Model initiative is providing compatible domain-specific data models. Both NGSI-LD and the Smart Data Models have been taken up by the Open Agile Smart City (OASC) network as Minimum Interoperability Mechanisms (MIM). FIWARE is collaborating with many other organizations world-wide to create synergies and increase impact.
