• There are six approaches used for working with community for rehabilitating legacy mines. • Community information is the most common practice, but leadership transfer is most effective. • The intersections of policy, people, process, contextual, and process ensure success. • There are theoretical, conceptual, and practical gaps about this area of enquiry.
