Abstract

The prevalence of kidney failure warranting dialysis or transplantation more than doubled between 2000 and 2019 to nearly 800,000 persons in the United States, with diabetes as the leading cause in 47% of those affected. 1,2 The incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among patients with diabetes is unknown, yet such data are vital for identifying high-risk populations, determining the effectiveness of interventions, and assessing the effects on health care delivery and public health responses.
