A review on manufacturing the surface composites by friction stir processing

Abstract

Friction Stir Processing (FSP) has become a leading technique to produce surface composite on the surface of various materials such as aluminum, magnesium, copper, steel, etc. FSP is used to improve the mechanical, tribological, corrosion, and other properties of the material by producing surface composite. Surface composites are suitable for various applications in industries like aerospace, railway, marine, etc. Many reviews discuss FSP and its process parameters are available but surface composites by FSP and its effect on different properties have not been wholesomely reviewed. In this review paper, an extensive study has been carried out on the manufacturing of surface composites by FSP. The review provides a detailed understanding of the working mechanism of FSP, factors affecting FSP, reinforcement materials, and tool parameters that affect the working of FSP. Various properties like hardness, wear, corrosion, and tensile strength which are altered during the manufacturing of surface composites by FSP has been discussed. Considering the effect of the microstructural change on various material properties, a discussion on microstructural analysis has been indexed in the review. This review also provides a future research direction in the area.
