Abstract

Previous research on children’s physical activity (PA) has mostly focused on affluent developed countries. However, there is currently a limited understanding of the relationship between home sports environments and PA in Chinese children. PURPOSE: This study aims to determine the relative contribution of home sports environments for predicting the likelihood that children meet established guidelines for daily PA. METHODS: Participants were 376 children aged 10 to 12 in the City of Kaifeng, central China's Henan province. Home sports environments was examined using self-report questionnaires by parent report on a survey. PA was measured by ActiGraph accelerometer. Outcomes were children’s accelerometer-measured PA and parent-reported home sports environments. RESULTS: The daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) of children in the City of Kaifeng reached to 32.40 min/d weekly. The working day participated in MVPA significantly more than rest day (33.76 min/d vs. 31.03 min/d). MVPA of children from urban had lower than rural (33.23 min/d vs. 35.93 min/d). In multiple regression models, decreased daily MVPA was associated with parents' physical training support (β = -0.125, p < 0.05) and the number of fixed family electronic products (β = -0.238, p < 0.01). The number of family electronic products (β = 0.166, p < 0.01) and the number of fixed family sports equipment (β = 0.107, p < 0.05) were positively associated with daily MVPA. CONCLUSION: The daily MVPA of children aged 10 to12 in Kaifeng was significantly lower than the recommended. The results showed that daily MVPA of Children from urban lower than rural. Parents' physical training support, the number of fixed family electronic products, the number of family electronic products and the number of fixed family sports equipment have significant predictive effect on daily MVPA of children.
