Abstract

Abstract This article reviews the basic definitions of microgrids and local energy communities in an attempt to clarify misconceptions, identify differences and find overlaps and similarities. It is shown that there are distinct differences between the two concepts; however, certain categories of microgrids, like the community microgrids, share common characteristics with local energy communities. In fact, the significant technical knowhow of the microgrids community and the advancements in decentralized techniques can critically support the operation and development of local energy communities. Microgrids can be regarded as valuable allies of local energy communities.
