Abstract
Recent floods in southern Europe, primarily driven by extratropical cyclones and intensified by climate change, have had severe socioeconomic consequences. Notable episodes include the floods in central Italy in 2023 1 and in Valencia in 2024 2 , both resulted in large economic losses, societal disruption, and fatalities. Additionally, the Mediterranean basin is increasingly recognised as a climate change hotspot 3 , 4 . For these reasons, understanding the impact of climate change on the interplay between cyclones and precipitation is more critical than ever.
