Abstract

There has been a great need in recent years for a comprehensive understanding of the effects of each rare earth elements (REEs) on the corrosion mechanisms of pure Mg and various Mg alloy systems. In this review, the influences of each REE on the corrosion properties of Mg and its alloys were discussed and the recent research findings in this field were summarized. In addition, the gaps in the existing literature on this subject were highlighted and the alloy design strategies that could enable the development of next-generation REE-containing Mg alloys with superior corrosion performance in the future were suggested.
