Abstract
Vermicomposting is a unique waste management approach for converting organic wastes into useful and environmental friendly fertilizer. Wastes originating from farms, forests, human settlement and industries are treated and the key drivers of this decomposition process are the microbes and earthworms. These organisms employ a plethora of biological catalysts in the breakdown of organic matter. Hence, the need for a critical understanding of these proteins that catalyze the various reactions in waste reduction and degradation. In this review, we emphasize the various roles of enzymes in vermicomposting, factors affecting their biological activities, and their indicator role in vermicompost maturity while focusing on maximizing their potential for quick waste treatment.
