The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated the collaboration between AI and extended reality tools, particularly in online education. The evolution of educational paradigms through AI adoption requires institutions to cultivate digital competencies, adapt to technological advancements, and meet the evolving needs of students. While AI’s impact is significant, ongoing debates and explorations delve into its societal implications, definition, and intersection with social frameworks. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of AI’s multifaceted influence on higher education, emphasizing the imperative for institutions to embrace technological advancements effectively and continually adapt to meet the dynamic requirements of students and society. The integration of AI, including large language models like ChatGPT, and XR technologies in higher education, signifies a transformative paradigm shift, compelling institutions to embrace and effectively integrate these advancements to cater to evolving student and societal needs.
