Abstract
Seamless conversion techniques between terahertz radio and optical fiber communication systems are in high demand for future access networks with a low carbon footprint. Radio-over-fiber technologies are a promising solution for realizing conversion in the millimeter-wave and terahertz bands using advanced optical modulation and photodetection devices. Herein, we briefly introduce radio-over-fiber technologies that enable applications to access networks in the seventh-generation mobile (7 G) system era. Low-noise and high-frequency oscillator configurations using photonics, which are utilized in terahertz transceivers, are also investigated. A future system integrated with fixed wireless terahertz radio is discussed concerning geographical issues under severe weather conditions.
