Abstract

The current prototype station for the SKA-Low radio telescope consists of a large number of antennas quasi-randomly distributed in close proximity to one another. An alternate, more uniform distribution of antennas is introduced, and preliminary simulation results are shown. This layout is under consideration as a possible replacement of the quasi-random positioning of the antennas. The main motivation for this new layout is to avoid pairs of antennas almost touching each other, which has a negative impact on the antenna pattern. The individual and station patterns are presented for the two layouts and show that the higher regularity in antenna distribution has beneficial effects, although there are other considerations which must be taken into account.
