Abstract
The breakage of bubbles in a turbulent fluid flow is studied to gain more insight into the gas bubbles breakage mechanisms and assist evaluating the breakage models used in Population Balance Modelling (PBM) for more accurate predictions. Experimental tests were performed for air bubbles in flows with different levels of turbulence intensity. A few of the existing models were evaluated against the experimental results and the measurements were used for determination of constant parameters of breakage functions. Moreover, new modifications to existing models were proposed to improve the prediction of breakage functions for the case of cascade breakage. The new functions proposed for the case of cascade breakage of bubble were also tested for liquid drop breakage. A discussion regarding the practicality of the conventional breakage models is presented.
