Abstract

Purpose. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of preoperative waiting time on the short-term outcomes and prognosis in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Methods. We retrospectively analyzed 3744 CRC patients who underwent primary CRC surgery at a single clinical medical center from Jan 2011 to Jan 2020. The baseline information, short-term outcomes, overall survival (OS), and disease-free survival (DFS) were compared among the short-waiting group, the intermediate-waiting group, and the long-waiting group. Results. A total of 3744 eligible CRC patients were enrolled for analysis. There were no significant differences in all of the baseline information and short-term outcomes among the three groups. In multivariate analysis, older age (OS: <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M1"> <a:mi>p</a:mi> <a:mo>=</a:mo> <a:mn>0.000</a:mn> </a:math> , HR = 1.947, 95% CI = 1.631–2.324; DFS: <c:math xmlns:c="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M2"> <c:mi>p</c:mi> <c:mo>=</c:mo> <c:mn>0.000</c:mn> </c:math> , HR = 1.693, 95% CI = 1.445–1.983), advanced clinical stage (OS: <e:math xmlns:e="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M3"> <e:mi>p</e:mi> <e:mo>=</e:mo> <e:mn>0.000</e:mn> </e:math> , HR = 1.301, 95% CI = 1.161–1.457; DFS: <g:math xmlns:g="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M4"> <g:mi>p</g:mi> <g:mo>=</g:mo> <g:mn>0.000</g:mn> </g:math> , HR = 1.262, 95% CI = 1.139–1.400), overall complications (OS: <i:math xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M5"> <i:mi>p</i:mi> <i:mo>=</i:mo> <i:mn>0.000</i:mn> </i:math> , HR = 1.613, 95% CI = 1.303–1.895; DFS: <k:math xmlns:k="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M6"> <k:mi>p</k:mi> <k:mo>=</k:mo> <k:mn>0.000</k:mn> </k:math> , HR = 1.560, 95% CI = 1.312–1.855), and major complications (OS: <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M7"> <m:mi>p</m:mi> <m:mo>=</m:mo> <m:mn>0.001</m:mn> </m:math> , HR = 1.812, 95% CI = 1.338–2.945; DFS: <o:math xmlns:o="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M8"> <o:mi>p</o:mi> <o:mo>=</o:mo> <o:mn>0.006</o:mn> </o:math> , HR = 1.647, 95% CI = 1.153–2.352) were independent factors of OS and DFS. In addition, no significant difference was found in all stages (OS, <q:math xmlns:q="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M9"> <q:mi>p</q:mi> <q:mo>=</q:mo> <q:mn>0.203</q:mn> </q:math> ; DFS, <s:math xmlns:s="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M10"> <s:mi>p</s:mi> <s:mo>=</s:mo> <s:mn>0.108</s:mn> </s:math> ), stage I (OS, <u:math xmlns:u="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M11"> <u:mi>p</u:mi> <u:mo>=</u:mo> <u:mn>0.419</u:mn> </u:math> ; DFS, <w:math xmlns:w="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M12"> <w:mi>p</w:mi> <w:mo>=</w:mo> <w:mn>0.579</w:mn> </w:math> ), stage II (OS, <y:math xmlns:y="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M13"> <y:mi>p</y:mi> <y:mo>=</y:mo> <y:mn>0.465</y:mn> </y:math> ; DFS, <ab:math xmlns:ab="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M14"> <ab:mi>p</ab:mi> <ab:mo>=</ab:mo> <ab:mn>0.385</ab:mn> </ab:math> ), or stage III (OS, <cb:math xmlns:cb="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M15"> <cb:mi>p</cb:mi> <cb:mo>=</cb:mo> <cb:mn>0.539</cb:mn> </cb:math> ; DFS, <eb:math xmlns:eb="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M16"> <eb:mi>p</eb:mi> <eb:mo>=</eb:mo> <eb:mn>0.259</eb:mn> </eb:math> ) in terms of OS and DFS among the three groups. Conclusion. Preoperative waiting time did not affect the short-term outcomes or prognosis in CRC patients.
