Congenital syphilis increases in the USA

Abstract
As of July 29, 2021, 2022 infants born in 2020 in the USA have been reported to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as having congenital syphilis. It is likely that this number will further increase when the final reporting is completed; however, it already surpasses the 1870 cases identified in 2019 and is the highest case count since 1994. Not only are cases increasing but so is the geographical spread. In 2010, 846 (28%) of all 3006 US counties reported at least one case of syphilis in women aged 15–44 years; by 2019, the number of counties had grown to 1568 (50%).
