Porous metal-based catalysts for water electrolysis

Abstract

Abstract Water electrolysis powered by renewable energy has gained attention as a potent method to obtain hydrogen. However, persistent limitations in reaction kinetics critically impede industrial deployment. In order to expedite reaction kinetics and mitigate the reaction overpotential of hydrogen evolution reaction/oxygen evolution reaction, it is critical to create effective catalysts. Designing porous nanostructures has emerged as an effective tactics for boosting catalytic performance by achieving increased active areas, plentiful active centers and open transmission channels. This review highlights the recent advancements in porous electrocatalysts composed of noble and transition metals, focusing on morphology design and catalytic performance, providing some feasible strategies and inspiration for the design of water electrolytic catalysts. Finally, some existing challenges and future development prospectives for porous catalysts toward water electrolysis are further summarized.
