Permission to study the unused donor lungs that served as controls at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital was obtained with the approval of the University of Pennsylvania Hospital Institutional Review Board from the donor's next of kin under the conditions described by the Gift of Life Donor Program. At the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the permission was obtained in accordance with Belgian law, according to which all eligible individuals automatically become donors and organs not required or of insufficient quality can be released for research.
