Abstract

Preliminary studies made in Java show that Western capacity manuals can give very misleading results. This is mainly due to the different traffic composition and driver behaviour in a developing country. A World Bank Loan funded project has been started in late 1990 with the aim to produce an Indonesian HCM based on extensive field surveys of traffic characteristics in traffic facilities in urban and semi-urban areas all over Indonesia. The study focuses on signalised intersections, unsignalised intersections, weaving areas and road links. The data collection will be performed by means of video cameras in combination with pneumatic tubes and other sensors linked to 32 channel data loggers. Intersections will be studied in a microscopic way permitting vehicle trajectories to be analyzed regarding vehicle behaviour in unsignalised conflict points, since right-of-way rules are not applied in Indonesia.
