Abstract
The inaugural meeting of the Assembly was convened in June 2014. The Committee, comprising all accredited permanent representatives of member states to United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), meets at least four times each year. It prepares the meetings of the Assembly and helps to oversee implementation of Assembly decisions. It is led by a five-member Bureau, elected for a two-year period. UNEP aims to maintain a constant watch on the changing state of the environment; to analyse trends; to assess problems using a wide range of data and techniques; and to undertake or support projects leading to environmentally sound development. In June 1997 a special session of the UN General Assembly was convened to review the state of the environment and progress achieved in implementing the objectives of the UN Conference on Environment and Development, that had been held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 1992.
