Abstract

DESs, Deep eutectic solvents have attracted considerable attention due to their distinctive characteristics and promising uses across a wide range of disciplines, making them a novel category of ionic liquids. This chapter examines the fundamental principle behind the creation and characteristics of DESs, setting them apart from conventional solvents. Key areas discussed include the thermodynamic and molecular interactions leading to their distinct physicochemical properties, flexible solvency, higher stability as well as including low volatility. Additionally, the section explores the extensive variety of applications of DESs range from green chemistry in addition to catalysis to pharmaceuticals and material science. The focus is on the benefits of DESs in promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly processes. Recent advancements in fabrication techniques, characterization and usage of DESs is emphasized offering a comprehensive overview of current research trends and upcoming trends in this swiftly changing industry.
