Abstract

The biomedical field is found to have a shift from nonbiodegradable polymers' application to ecofriendly biopolymers due to its easy degradability and compatibility with biological matters. Because of all these attractive features, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are the choice of interest of all biologists. This microbial-origin polymeric biomaterial has expanded its efficacy and efficiency as an excellent biomedical candidate having various applications in the field of biomedical applications. Additionally, the presence of 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) has been observed in components of blood in the eukaryotic cell. Furthermore, these days, polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is used for several biomedical uses such as drug delivery, skin grafting, physical fixation substantiates, and inert medical meshes extra. More specifically, 112PHB, due to its physiochemical properties that are suitable for a large extent of medical applications, is a proper biomaterial for tissue engineering such as preparation of scaffolding and fabrication of nontoxic, biocompatible resorbable medical apparatus such as plates, sutures, stents, bone-fixation devices, tissue repairs, and screws. Generally, the lower rate of the resorbing nature is worthful while focusing toward tissue engineering as this concept provides ample time to heal properly. In vivo and in vitro studies revealed that most of the monomers from PHAs are biocompatible with the human body that enhances the use of these materials for the use of drug delivery. After finishing all the served work, it degrades properly with zero toxicity. The new area of research strives toward various biopolymer applications, especially target clinical use, as well as biomedical appliance. Here we have compiled the how PHA is an excellent candidate in the biopolymer field, precisely, its advanced uses in drug-delivery applications and tissue engineering.
