Abstract

Abstract Published data on experimental and theoretical studies of systems for long-term storage and transportation of hydrogen, based on liquid organic hydrogen carriers operating in hydrogenation–dehydrogenation cycles, are reviewed. Comparative analysis of the hydrogen capacity and hydrogenation–dehydrogenation conditions was made for various classes of organic compounds used as hydrogen carriers (cycloalkanes, polycyclic alkanes, hydrocarbons containing heteroatoms, etc.). The catalysts (heterogeneous catalysts based on noble metals) and designs of reactors (including those with proton-exchange membranes) used for efficient and selective dehydrogenation of organic hydrogen carriers were also compared.
