Abstract

Abstract This research is a descriptive study that aims to describe the scaffolding conducted by the teacher in helping students and students’ strategies in solving problems. The subjects of this research were 20 students grade IX of junior high school number 3 Palembang. The instruments used in this study were field notes, observation sheets, student worksheets and interviews. Based on the research results, scaffolding can help solve students’ problem solving. Scaffolding in form a written questions and directed guidance with step by step are as a bridge in solving problems. Scaffolding which starts with sketching can be teacher feedback in knowing the concept of student images. Differences in students solution and student strategies are influenced by prior knowledge, background experience, intellectual abilities, and writing abilities in mathematical language.
