Dramatically improved optical anisotropy by realizing stereochemically active lone pairs in a sulfate system, K<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>·HIO<sub>3</sub>

Abstract
A novel birefringent material, K 2 SO 4 ·HIO 3 , was developed by introducing a polyhedron of lone pair cations. This material shows a 70-fold increase in birefringence compared to the corresponding monosulfate, K 2 SO 4 .
