Abstract

5G is the fifth generation of wireless communication and the future wireless technology paradigm, with the aim of ubiquitous connectivity. It envisions diverse technological solutions including uninterrupted connectivity, high bandwidth, utilization of unexplored frequency bands for wireless communication, high data capacity, low latency and superior Quality of Service (QoS). 5G requirements and technology goals have acquired considerable research attention across the world. In this regard machine learning (ML) is recognized and explored as a promising technology for 5G. In the current work, the classical and recent ML algorithms based on the method of learning are classified. The paper summarizes and presents the role of ML algorithms in various aspects of 5G and reports their applicability in 5G solutions through individual case studies. The study is extended to 6G, the sixth generation of wireless communication evolution. The current work also reports the applications of ML algorithms to make the 6G dream conceivable and suggest the future research directions involving ML in 6G.
