Ageing populations: unaffordable demography
The Lancet Healthy Longevity
Abstract
On Nov 15, 2022, the world's population reached a new high of 8 billion people. This record population is driven partly by high birth rates in some countries, but predominantly by increases in human longevity brought about by public health measures and nutritional and medical advances. Although extended human longevity driving global population growth is a triumph for individuals leading longer, healthier lives, it is a slow-burning catastrophe for societies unprepared for this demographic transition.
