Unleashing the role of ChatGPT in Metaverse learning environments: opportunities, challenges, and future research agendas

Abstract
The rapidly evolving digital landscape, punctuated by the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and immersive technologies, is poised to reshape learning environments dramatically. This study explores the potential use of ChatGPT, a state-of-the-art language model developed by OpenAI, in Metaverse learning environments. It sheds light on several opportunities ChatGPT can bring to Metaverse learning environments. This includes personalized learning, virtual teaching assistant, collaborative learning, language learning, accessibility, persistent education, simulations and role plays, and research assistant. In addition to these opportunities, several challenges were also identified. This includes technological issues, digital literacy, information accuracy, social interaction, privacy and security, ethical considerations, and AI dependence. Given these opportunities and challenges, the study identifies several agendas for future research. This fresh overview is believed to provide a roadmap for harnessing the potential of ChatGPT in Metaverse learning environments while navigating the associated challenges, setting the stage for a new era of digital learning in educational settings.
