Abstract

In recent days, super-absorbent polymers (SAPs) are utilized as an absorbent in various applications. The majority of SAPs are still prepared synthetically consisting of acrylate content, which shows significant absorbency to the targeted application. Despite this, it shows an adverse effect on both health and the environment. Thus, natural SAPs have grown their popularity as compared to synthetic counterparts, which are not typically biocompatible, biodegradable, or renewable. On the other hand, natural SAPs are cheap, highly hydrophilic, nontoxic, biocompatible, and biodegradable. This study describes synthesis principles, classification, and applications of the bio-based super-absorbent polymer with special emphasis on biodegradability.
