Identifying key points of disagreement in non-native impacts and valuations

Abstract
We recently published an opinion article that recognized the negative impacts of non-native species, but which also explicitly called for greater recognition, consideration, and investigation of their positive impacts [1]. Most non-native species have both positive and negative effects that manifest across different types of values (relational, instrumental, intrinsic), vary in space and time, and have diverse relevance to different stakeholders. Invasion science literature has sometimes promoted an implicit focus on negative impacts of non-native species, so it is perhaps unsurprising that our opinion article has generated debate and discussion, resulting in three published responses [2–4].
