Abstract

Composites are tailor made materials which are the combination of two or more indistinct elements whose properties cannot be achieved when the materials are separate. Specifically, Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) are industry oriented materials belonging to recent times due to their superior and tailorable properties. Aluminium matrix composites are most widely used in many applications due to their low density, high strength-to-weight ratio, better wear and corrosion confrontation and ease of fabrication. Most of the current contact applications require lubrication, particularly the areas involving metals or metal matrix composites. It is feasible to incorporatemetalmatrix composites with self-lubricants as reinforcements. In addition to this some contact applications like bearings and cylinder blocks require additional lubrication. Hence in the current work the tyreoil is extracted from discarded tyresthrough pyrolysis. AA2219/MoS2 matrix composites is fabricated by reinforcing 1.5%, 3%, and 4.5% of MoS2 through stir casting. Wear properties of the composites were investigated under lubricated conditions. Experiments were designedby Taguchi method following L27 orthogonal array (OA) and interpretations were done by ANOVA. It could be observed that the wear resistance of the composites under lubrication was found to bebetterfor the selected combinations of MoS2. Wear surface of the composite specimen was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy.
