Abstract

Heat pipe is a devise which uses sensible heat to transfer heat from one end of tube to the other end. Heat pipe heat exchanger is one of the advanced techniques in storing and releasing of energy. Copper was used as a tube material and Demineralized-water as the working fluid. The heat pipe utilizes the latent heat of the vaporized working fluid instead of the sensible heat. The heat pipe heat exchanger is one of the attractive devices used in waste heat recovery because of its high effectiveness in heat transfer and other special features. Heat pipe heat exchangers have been used in many ways, in boilers, furnaces and dryers, especially for energy recovery in steel industry. The results reveal decrease in transfer of heat with the increase in mass flow rate. The better effectiveness is observed for fixed cold water flow rate. The heat pipe heat exchanger was found to be an effective method to replace conventional heat exchanger with better effectiveness and compactness. The increase in the effectiveness is attributed by the passive operation and superconducting ability of the HPHE fluid. It is also noticed that the rise in the power input of the HPHE results in increased temperature of the pipe wall temperature.
