Abstract
The state-of-the-art review of phase change material (PCM)-based latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) systems used in various industrial and domestic applications is presented in this article. The primary objective of this paper is to focus on the techniques used to improve the performance of PCM-based LHTES systems. The techniques discussed are an enhancement of heat transfer, thermal conductivity enhancement of PCM and combined enhancement techniques. This paper gives an insight of heat transfer enhancement of LHTES using extended surfaces or fins, multiple phase change materials (PCM) and heat pipes. The enhancement of thermal conductivity of PCM is discussed in detail which includes encapsulation of PCM and addition of nanomaterial to PCM. Finally, the article summarises a wide range of applications of PCM in various fields like solar energy, building material, cooling system, heat recovery, textile industry and nuclear energy.
