Buckling-restrained braces as hysteretic dampers

Abstract
Braces are effective as seismic members of building structures and are widely used in low- to high-rise buildings. However, conventional braces sustain buckling under a compressive force. To solve these shortcomings surrounding conventional braced structures, a number of studies have been reported on the use of buckling-restrained braces. In this study, first the said four types are designed on the condition that braces will not buckle at least by the frame deformation of 1/100 story deformation angle. Then, the hysteresis characteristics, final fracture characteristics and cumulative absorbed energy are investigated.
