Abstract

Methods to improve the damping efficiency of dampers have been widely investigated. This study introduces a shaking table test on a viscous damping wall (VDW) with a displacement amplification mechanism. A mechanical model was developed and validated using a model test. Then, shaking table tests were conducted on five-story steel frames equipped with an VDW and a viscous damping wall with amplification mechanism (AVDW). The AVDW was confirmed to be effective in mitigating the structural acceleration, inter-story displacement, and shear forces. Finally, a numerical simulation of a seven-story structure was performed to characterise the seismic behaviour of the AVDW system. By comparing the structural responses and performance state, the efficiency of the AVDW in mitigating the structural responses and improving seismic safety was confirmed.
