Friction behavior in metal cutting: Modeling and simulation

Abstract

This work presents a simplified constitutive modeling approach to describe the operating friction mechanisms during metal cutting. The modeling approach is based on an advanced experimental set-up with high speed filming of the orthogonal cutting process as well as the classical Oxley’s parallel shear zone model. Finite element cutting simulations on carbon steel AISI 1045 with different uncut chip thicknesses and cutting speeds were conducted to validate the developed friction modeling approach. A realistic numerical prediction of cutting process reactions could be achieved.
